It says SDR on the faceplate, so it has SDR! So I see that's a hilltopper series of portable rigs with a max out of 20 watts, guessing that would be PEP. Nice, it would get you out in the field again, charge up those batteries.by Radio Animal - The Workshop
I'd rather that AM radio stay the same, and use another band for digital radio, if they're eventually going to digitize the whole AM band anyway, since either way you lose analog receivers. On the other side, putting digital radio in the AM band helps to protect it from being shut down, keeping it alive longer, since it will then be useful for carrying those digital signals, and the analogs thby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
That's odd in these times, they're supposed to be lowering some of the fees for broadcast. Could it be like a cover charge in order to try and keep riff-raff out? I can't see the treasury benefiting that much from the fees.by Radio Animal - General radio discussion
That's right! I'd forgotten about that use, but many AM stations have night allocations for as low as 1 watt, and there's a 70 watt station, and one that's 24 watts near my city, and I can hear those 10 and 20 miles away. Even 1 watt gets out for a mile or more with a local signal level, going by propagation maps at Radio-Locator. 1 watt would be enough signal for many small towns. Thanks for all the information, ThaDood. I think LPB is the best Carrier-Current equipment overall. You paid a premium, but they didn't cut corners like other companies, using brute force RF power amp stages with over rated transistors and low-pass filter components and big heat sinks. I wouldn't think they'd be great for those new to broadcasting, unless you have a tech who knows the equipmeby Radio Animal - The Workshop
I know, I've looked at Bomar myself, and I was wondering about ordering from them, and I couldn't find others in the USA either. There are a few around the world that it seems you can order from if you're in North America. I don't know if right now is a good time to buy out of the country, orders may be delayed by quarantine. I heard that was a complaint of people wanting to set up a licensed LPFM, that EAS gear was one of the larger expenses involved. I hope that in the next round of LPFM stations, software EAS is allowed. It's not a field I know well, but I've read LPFM station blogs and bios that said they had to buy hardware EAS boxes, and Canada allows software, which could make it cheaper. FM stations obviously need more space, in my area it seems that almost every frequency that can hold an FM station is filled, but the FM band still has the same 88-108 mhz span as its had for decades. I have a pocket radio that tunes from 76-108 mhz analog, so it technically should be possible to homestead new channels on lower frequencies, and new radios to be produced for that range. Not having been to the NASWA fest to know what went on there, that still sounds like an unusual request at a radio listening and technology gathering, at least for something like that to be said openly. If it means what the question sounds like, I wonder why he wanted to do it? He might have been the folk hero that radio needed!by Radio Animal - General radio discussion
I remember you, very much during the OZ days for sure, we had OZ-some good chats at the Gathering. I thought it was funny, a wild animal chats with a domestic, me with my Dog collar on. I hear some great sounding AM stations, mainly on the night airwaves, like 650 WSM Nashville, 1520 WWKB Buffalo, WJR from Detroit at 760 and CFZM 740 is pretty clean too. Locally no one is that good with their all-around sound. Some are good to downright bad and telephonic. Others have settings for crisp voice, but when music comes on, it sounds chewed up. Very good Paul, that's a thorough follow-up too, seems like they got a lot of input on that article! Now I wonder if they'll have it as a segment on a Radio Survivor show? I run those every week myself on the old Part-15 station.by Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Aw man, that is really sad, (if it's verified to be true, and one has to watch on line, where there are a zillion and one death hoaxes). It's detailed and looks legitimate though. A person of many accomplishments, and we had many worthwhile phone calls and e-communications on line about electronics, radio production, antennas and new ideas about how to use radio. We even discussed pets, and whby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
You mean not having that SDR crap, yeah? I didn't necessarily need it myself, worried that it would make my old radio collection obsolete, but I'm curious about tech, and have been bitten by the bug. Actually, if I can install it remote from my home, it's going to revitalize my listening. If you mean AM stereo, well C-QUAM has been around since the early 1980s, so long that it's out of patentby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
I agree, it's good to use any possible technology to the max, it's always good to care and be proud of offering quality sound to listeners. It's also something to promote being in stereo on the air, and might get a few listeners. What could be driving the increase in stereo AM stations could be those who run music formats with stereo on their FM translator, meaning they already would have steby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
That's like 1520 from Buffalo NY, big signal here at times and the stereo light is on at all times, but with a lot of what they do being sports talk, I don't know how much stereo does for them, though some receivers might widen their bandwidths in mono. I try to hear separation in the commercials, that would be the place, and I think I hear it, but then propagation effects make it hard to hearby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Your post made me laugh, but that's true, stations seem to be more programming than personality today, go on and play the tunes. Maybe stations are picking up on what mainstream press thinks a pirate station's format is, all music with no IDs heard, or any talking. The public will describe a station that way, 'all music, so I thought it was a pirate station.' They must have a microphone, bby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
I've wondered about the spelling of some station names, and sometimes I search to see if they might have gotten the name from somewhere else, like a song or book title and use that spelling in my notes. I have a suggestion, Zeke and others could craft a small graphic with their station's logo, then encode it as a SSTV image and played after their show was over. Pit Bull Radio, now you're talkin'! We need more of this kind of thing. I don't know about the voice IDs though, that's old fashioned and ruins what pirate radio has become today. Boomaby Radio Animal - Free Radio Logs
Getting this too, on a PA Web SDR, and there it's S-7 to S-9, and Hudson is in the background and sometimes doubling. All easy, new age style pop music, like a newer version of the Beautiful Music format, newer instruments, upbeat, and no IDs. Audio bass response is good, highs are pretty clear to the receiver's limit, good sound there.by Radio Animal - Free Radio Logs
Here here. I'm in a noisy situation too, and thinking about some kind of active remote antenna fed by coax or getting into SDR and start to post again. Away from the houses it's a lot quieter and I can get remote 150 feet or more with an antenna in the woods. Another project.by Radio Animal - Free Radio Logs
Ohh, pardon the intrusion captain, just excited to read that there's a Dog station on the air! CB Buzzin' Bee I haven't used my rig for years now, but have good memories of working on getting my station put up and barking with a friend from school on it, and others in the area, and every channel was hopping mad with users day and night. I looked for reports of someone hearing the TIS earlier this week, but haven't seen any logs of it, it would seem to be a good DX target, if they run it at night. They're almost like a Part-15 station, but with more power. I wonder if they could have used Part-15 AM? That's nice, we have some voices really using AM for community radio, but we need more in different cities. There are a couple of decent stations in my area, one with general talk all day, and a cluster of regional stations with some local shows and DJs. That's the thing, C-QUAM AM stereo is a technology that really works, if you have a local radio station using it and a stereo AM receiver, it's a worthwhile improvement in the sound over mono AM. As we've found out, the receivers are also built better to receive C-QUAM, so you win all the way around. That might be good if you're an experimenter, or have a radio or software radio that has DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale, not Digital Rights Management) reception on it. Another thing I thought of was using a digital mode as a studio to transmitter link, because most people wouldn't be able to pick up DRM, so it might make a good utility to use after the novelty has worn off.
