I'd rather that AM radio stay the same, and use another band for digital radio, if they're eventually going to digitize the whole AM band anyway, since either way you lose analog receivers.

On the other side, putting digital radio in the AM band helps to protect it from being shut down, keeping it alive longer, since it will then be useful for carrying those digital signals, and the analogs that will stay on.

I don't think that all media should be dominated by the smart phone and internet, we need alternatives that are cheap and free, and are outside of that control.
