"The broadcast industry" wants HD radio because iHeart (the largest broadcast chain) is a major investor in it - and I imagine all the other major players are, too. So of course they want a return on that investment. If it flops they lose big time.
However, it'll be like videotapes and DVDs - you'll always have to buy the newest version to "keep up with the Jones". You think the buying public is going to run out and buy HD radios? I doubt it. Heck, the government had to offer $40 coupons to get people into digital television! Maybe they'll do the same for HD radio?
America needs a sense of humor...
