It seems like that dude's on a roll, coming up with designs for items radio people can use, and he doesn't just stop at making one thing. I hope that one day he could form a company, because we've lost a lot of the old line kit companies like Heath and Ramsey, so we need something new out there. I can see your approach to audio processing, the pros actually use something similar in broadcastinby Radio Animal - The Workshop
I guess they could take over a TIS if there was one assigned to the area for events, but a Part-15 station would be great, and more DIY ham style. Here's a big question, will they QSL for the 1620 info broadcast? I wouldn't be surprised if Hamvention got hundreds of requests for QSLs! Boomerby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
That is sad, I don't think we ever had the chance to meet, but I once got a QSL from Radio Airplane, I think it was around the mid-1990s. Thanks for all your work and FFFR over the years, and rest in paradise. Boomerby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Hi Pat, from the show.. :) I heard Art do a few shows on radio topics, and I liked that as a ham and radio guy, he wasn't afraid to ask about technical matters, which normal hosts never seem to get into. For me, that made his shows much more interesting. As part of shows on other topics, radio came up all the time. On the air he talked about pirate radio he was part of as a youth, and whenby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
I used to hear Radio Airplane, and think I have their QSL. Yes, best wishes. Boomerby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Last night I was hearing something on 530, just on a boombox in my bedroom, but didn't stay to try to figure out what it was. I've heard stations on that frequency for years, I think there was a college station from Toronto there in the past. I've also seen Radio Locator listings for low power broadcasters that have local strength service out to a half mile, then secondary service for ten milby Radio Animal - Medium Wave Logs
It could be, if someone happens to look at the site at the right time. I've done it in the past, hit the site when a station might still be on. Without some of the big posters like Joe Flips making entries right now, it would be harder to get here at the right time, but it could still happen. FRN needs to open a booth at the Winterfest and other DXing and SWL meets. Boomby Radio Animal - Free Radio Logs
Hey, just watch that you don't get your refrigerator shot this year Dood. Texting would be quieter, if you keep the phone's chime off, though it would seem to be easier just to key and say a few words into a walkie talkie, and the radio's better one handed. Plus you might not have cell service in a wooded hunting area. Boomerby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
It was a fun project, and I remember Franklin Video offering it through radio magazines back then. I wonder if Franklin is out there yet, maybe someone from the group is reading this.. I'd like to see the video get remastered for the digital video age and make the rounds. Maybe it's DIY, but that's what people like now, and it is a document of something that happened and the scene the way itby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
That's crazy, it sounds so historical to think of grinding crystals, like it's radio a hundred years ago! What will the do if they want to go back to the old frequency, like if the new freq doesn't work out? I'll have to listen in. Boomerby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Maybe that's a weed station, like I read that Denver CO had, I think theirs was Smokin' 95. I think an all-leaf station would be a great format to put lots of heavy rock on, a good excuse for it!by Radio Animal - Medium Wave Logs
I looked at WPTX at Radio-Locator, and their antenna is located on a peninsula, with lots of water on three sides. Their signal hits the water, then shoots off to other shores, and it seems like half their red circle, 2.5 millivolt local coverage is on the water. I think the daytime pattern looks like a Dog's head, with a smile.. :) It looks like they get out an average of 20 miles for their 1by Radio Animal - Medium Wave Logs
Your name got me, it could be Reverend Bow Wow! That's how I saw it anyway. I've seen those instructions, small foldout paper with fine print and doesn't really say much, but some users have said they got no instructions at all! I see some of the lower power transmitters have a short rubber or metal collapsible antenna, do they still have that kind of antenna for the more powerful ones? Itby Radio Animal - The Workshop
For listening to pirates, it would need sideband, or as you say, some tricky situations with AM signals. My cheap shortwave radios just use a BFO at the IF (intermediate frequency) to inject a carrier, simple and works well enough once you get it tuned in. I've also used the BFO to pick up AM stations too, parking it on top of the AM signal's carrier to push out some noise to hear the station betby Radio Animal - The Workshop
".. but they like that kind of music over there!" You can bypass that music easily, just start the file and as soon as possible, click the progress bar to the 10:00 mark, that's where the talk about the Titus will start. I didn't hear anything bad about the radio in the review, just that they had to go back and add shielding to lower digital noise pickup. Mostly the piece was a reviby Radio Animal - The Workshop
There are some transmitters where you can select 50 or 75 for different countries. I remember Ramsey's FM-10 using 50, and it had a better reason, keeping the treble reduced a bit, so it wouldn't interfere as much with the 19 khz pilot and subcarrier frequencies. The newer transmitter chips have filtering, but there's still the pre-emphasis to deal with, the highs are pumped up so much thby Radio Animal - The Workshop
It seems most frequency control systems have gone over to synthesis, where a single common and cheap (I mean pennies) oscillating crystal is the reference for every frequency needed in a radio. It could be 10 mhz., and I've seen a single 32.768 crystal used as a reference in a tiny mp3 FM transmitter, creating the carrier and all other frequencies needed for an FM stereo signal digitally. All I know about Crazy Roger is from Radio Confusion's write up in Popular Communications first issue in the early 1980s, in their Pirate's Den column that I read and re-read. Radio Confusion's studios looked awesome to me, simple, clean and pro, where my system was more homebrew, with taped together wires at the time. When I was active I wanted to try that frequency, around 3.4, but never made an antenna for it. Snaky comment:: Why is a station of such Legend playing such I-Heart music?.. ;) Boomieby Radio Animal - Free Radio Logs
Great to see stuff like this being posted about here on FRN. I haven't heard this station and don't know much about the legend behind it, but it's good when pirates take a classic tale or idea and work with it as a tribute, like offshore radio, Raynard the Fox, or WHYP. Everyone should come back with blogs about Winterfest and post them. I used to see some great wrap-ups and post postmortems iby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Interesting, coverage of the 2 meter ham band. I've heard conflicting reports of the CZE, etc. equipment. Breakdown videos and blogs seem to show good construction on the inside, pro boards and decent low pass filtering of the output, but some say they interfere, or that there are clones that aren't as good as the originals. Some of this could be from uninformed people repeating bad info, or otheby Radio Animal - The Workshop
I used to recommend the Broadcast Warehouse 1 watt exciter card, pro quality at a decent price. I don't know the status of it now, but you can do a search and find out. One that I hear a lot about these days is EDM transmitters, which seem to be most popular for Christmas displays, which is how I found out about them. The proprietors of those displays are quality conscious, and a lot of thoseby Radio Animal - The Workshop
Interesting about Brits being more open to at least talking about pirate subjects. I thought modern America was formed by rebels! Ah, but then we also believe in commercialism as the path to success and money in radio, just follow the rules adequately and we'll leave your business alone. Now to mention the spectrum auctioning that's happening these days, leading to even greater feelings of poby Radio Animal - General radio discussion
Neat update, it really is cost effective, considering I paid over $200 for my DX-440 Radio Shack back then, and now this is something so far advanced, for much less money, especially considering inflation since then. It would be cool if they could make it a transceiver by adding a transmit module, like QRP or SSB at 10 watts, adding a mic jack, with a more powerful battery. You could get SSB aby Radio Animal - The Workshop

Cool, it shows there still is something interesting on the AM band these days.. :) I look for music, and always seem to find it on Canadian and ethnic stations, and a few doing Gold formats like 690 from Fisher, WV. I've been searching more since many AM stations got FM translators, with the intention of being FM music stations, meaning those AMs are now playing music again. Well, my friend had an odd reception at 1610 khz, what sounded like a college station in English, Canadian accented, with a strong signal. The program was an informal discussion of lasers and light refraction with what sounded like a small group of high school or college students, new to radio. Was it CHHA with an English program? It seemed Spanish music was behind the student talk, but muted.by Radio Animal - General radio discussion
I remember some of those posting, and I like Dogcow and Radio boob.. :) The old FRN was rocking at one time, and had some great technical discussions with radios and antenna setups for different bands. Things must change, and most folks have gone on to commercial social sites I guess. I don't like them as much because they're not one stop shopping. I don't post to forums all that much either,by Radio Animal - General radio discussion
This isn't a report of reception, but rather a wish that I had heard this broadcast! I'm involved in and know the Furry scene, and this seems like the kind of thing Furry people would put on. I haven't attempted much listening on longwave, but Europe's transmissions are interesting, and how it's used to cover large areas. I haven't gotten a sense of how much range they really have, but it seems to be better than anything on mediumwave, covering Britain from Ireland.
