From the Existential Issue: The Pirate Radio Capital. A sound tour with our friend David Goren, radio producer, audio archivist, and creator of the Brooklyn Pirate Radio Sound Map.

Columbia Journalism Review, 4 May 2021

"The Godfather of New York City pirates, as David calls him, was a guy named Allan Weiner. As a high school kid in Yonkers, Weiner put a couple of stations on the air using old World War II surplus receivers. He’d also share his gear with people across the boroughs. By 1982, the New York Times counted about twelve active stations in the city. The FCC was always listening. Enforcement was active back then, so in 1987 Weiner bought a ship, named it the Sarah, and invited some other local pirates to join him. They broadcast four miles off Long Island and called the project Radio New York International. It worked for about two days before the Coast Guard came in. Weiner was handcuffed and taken off the air."

== A mystery station

7/21, 0027-0559+, 6885. At 0027, JBA carrier suspect NAm pirate as a pirate frequency previously; but still at 0124, 0153, 0559! So likely something else. HFU has no reports on 6885 at this time, since July 18 in the daytime, a Radio Pushka heard via remote in NM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

7/17, 0112, 6960am. 80’s style pop then early 60’s pop both mentioning “blue,” ID then a program of “blue” referenced songs including “Blue suede shoes” and “Judy blue eyes,” among many more. Good. (Taylor – WI)

** KAT/Eye of the Kat (Zeeky)

7/17, 0010, 6925usb. In Normal IL and Barrington Hills IL sdr's, S7 to S9 fair signal on both, DJ talking then ID as Kat Eye Radio, now a rap(?) tune, at 0029 played the infamous tune "je t'aime" by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourge from 1969, then played "groovy kind of love" from 1965. (Hassig-IL)

7/17, 0037-0054, 6925usb. Zeeky having fun playing Bruce Springsteen songs. One that I recognized was Mansion on the Hill. Good Signal (Majewski CT)

7/18, 0042-0046+, 6925usb. Rock & R&B; Zeeky comments @0044 followed by a few sec. of transmitus interuptus. S7 (Frodge-MI)

7/18, 0012, 6950usb. Zeeky with electronic blues; talked about changing frequency from 6925U (where I heard him briefly then changed to listen to other things) due to interference. Into program of dance music and usual chat. Good. (Taylor – WI)

** Mix Radio International

7/22, 0113-0119+, 6955usb. Classic rock ditties; Let the Good Times Roll, Call Me. SIO=3+53+ (Frodge-MI)

** Nowhere Radio

7/17, 0201, 6974.9am. Unidentified (usually been Nowhere Radio). Strong signal with dead air for about 30 seconds after t/in then electronic instrumental, dead air for about 2 minutes, then another song and dead air. Tuned out then tired of the long pauses between songs. Noticed the signal staying there for most of the night while I was listening to other pirates. Fair – good. (Taylor – WI)

7/18, 0034-0039+, 6974.9am. Ethereal music. S9, probably Nowhere Radio...another me too music pirate (Frodge-MI)

7/19, 0116, 6974.9am. Mellow music, good signal, noisy conditions. Presumed Nowhere Radio based on past loggings of this station at this time and on this exact frequency. (Will-MD)

7/21, 0125, 6974.9am. JBA music, presumed Nowhere Radio, previous pirate on this off-frequency, but always very weak here and tough to ID (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also unID 6885

** Outhouse Radio

7/18, 0118, 6955usb. Outhouse with a variety of blusey and guitar rock music with many SSTV’s including muse skull and crossbones – “Dead Mouse Radio”; Squirrel with “Pee Wee”; Lion roaring; dog peeking out from under a blanket; parody label with man in chef’s hat “Boyarewe Screwed”; poor reception of a black man with African colors, poor image of what appeared to be the Koolaid character behind caution tape; a very jury rigged electronical plug; cartoon smiley face laughing, man announcer with “Goddamit Leeroy”; Parody label with illegible writing a face in the middle and “LJC” at the bottom (KFC ad parody); B&W outhouse with an antenna from the chimney with “Outhouse Radio” (characteristic ID), 0220 off. Started out good but slowly deteriorated to poor by end. (Taylor – WI)

7/18, 0127, 6955usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr, fair S9 signal with low noise, slow pop tune, at 0129½ SSTV/FAX, more tunes and SSTV/FAX's. (Hassig-IL)

** Planet 4

7/18, 0042, 6933.5lsb. Atmospheric music, distorted man with only a few words intelligible mentioning “Planet 4,” section from “Leave it to Beaver,” atmospheric music comes up and continues. The program continued with different sections of music, clips of TV and radio programs and the distorted man talking with soliloquy at the end about the 4th planet and dire warnings about the Earth. Off. Fair to good. Pretty sure this was the same program as was on several weeks ago, although better reception this week. (Taylor – WI)
