Last night about 10PM EST, coming back from work, CB CH 19 was full of skip. The Superbowl channel, CH 6, was really hopping. So, looks like winter sporadic E season is coming back. Anyone hearing WWV on 25MHz yet?by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Ya know, I've checked out that site about the up and coming portable SDR the Titus II with some great curiosity and fascination, However, this thought has come to mind. One thing that is great about listening to analog radio is the fact that the potential listeners can listen to any station received anonymously, unless caught in the act, or if that listener just tells you so. With diby ThaDood - General radio discussion
More from SWL'ing. And more info on that portable SDR, I'm very interested upon just how well it works in the real-world environment of QRM / QRN, fading, local strong station front end overload, ADJ channel rejection, image rejection, various steps of attenuation, bandwidth ADJ, S/N ratio, etc. If they can cope with all those parameters decently, and for under $100.00 USD's, then thisby ThaDood - The Workshop
Yeah, weird. Isn't it? Someone's got a flame thrower of a TX, but just no MOD of VOX, or data. At least, from what I can hear. Someone just trying to hold that FREQ? Seems strange. If it ever does MOD, it could cause some serious splatter to WBCQ's 5130KHz. Hmmmmmm...by ThaDood - Other logs
Did anyone else hear that strong carrier on 11/1/2016, around 02:27 UTC on 5125KHz, just -5KHz below WBCQ's FREQ? Signal peaked at S9, with quick, rapid, fades, but pretty consistent. Still there when I kicked the rig off around 02:45 UTC.by ThaDood - Other logs
We're back on shortwave station WBCQ this Halloween weekend, www.wbcq.com to air on the show Area 51. Not one, but two nights! On WBCQ frequency of 5130KHz, AM mode, show Capital Rips #53 and #54 should air Saturday night from 10PM - midnight EST, or 02:00 UTC - 04:00 UTC, and show Capital Rips #55FIN should air Sunday night at 10PM EST, or 02:00 UTC. If you can, TUNE-IN!!!!! Then, e-mailby ThaDood - Broadcast announcements
Ripped this from the latest Radio Survivor, Now, if I can get Radio Survivor to cover WBCQ sometime. Allan would certainly be a good interview for their podcasted shows. Speaking of which, don't forget to check out their show #67 while you're on their site.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Hear it in WV. from S5 to S6 and very harsh & heavy lightning static crashes. Even in USB and bandwidth tighten to 1.8KHz, it's a tough copy.by ThaDood - Free Radio Logs
Ooooops... Yeah, Paul from Radio Survivor has kind of hinted to me that the article that he wrote was about 6 years ago. So, if you haven't found any Super Radio III's from the preceding link, well... That might just explain a few things. But, what is nice is the page for tune-up and tweak-up of a Super Radio III , This is what I've tuned mine up to a while ago and it does indeed makeby ThaDood - The Workshop
This is a neat read. Anyone ever heard this station on 4625KHz? Gotta' warn ya, it's a big page to load due to the amount of PIC's in it, but a neat story nonetheless.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Found this on Radio Survivior, The radio offer is not valid due to age of article, (Thank you Paul for pointing that out to me.), but still a neat read. The one that I bought off of JTA about 20 years ago I've modified the FM with the 110KHz Toko IF filter. And somewhere, if I can find the damn directions, is the tune-up procedure for these radios. Being that it's varactor diode tuning, thby ThaDood - The Workshop
Well, ya can't get much bigger TX gear than WRNO up close, so when SWL'ing posted this, I could only share it. I still miss the WRNO early 80's rock 'n roll days. Albeit, it was the then Top 40. Still, they were the only game around back then,by ThaDood - The Workshop
Well, what do you think of this dude's DX Contest proposal? Seems like a neat idea.Yep, ripped from SWL'ing again.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Another good grab from SWLing, Um, this is intriguing, but haven't we learned yet that it's not a good idea to mess with Mother nature? Apparently not.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Well, I like it, I'll find more uses for this than an SDR input.by ThaDood - The Workshop
With the advent of this big-ass heatwave in the USA and Canada this mid-July, tropo and ducting at late nights and very early mornings DX enhancements in the VHF and UHF bands. Just last night at 1AM my time, after Sporadic "E" died out on 6M, 10M, 11M, etc., I tuned around 2M, 222MHz, and 440MHz, and found no activity. Down where I am in West Virginia the late night repeater talkers seby ThaDood - General radio discussion
Well, last night, 7/21/2016, 04:00UTC, Sporadic "E" was still banging away on 11M CB. Hours earlier I did several 6M and 10M contacts to Texas. Just for the heck of it, at mignight my time, I tuned lower in FREQ. WWV was in there at 25MHz! And, I was still hearing that Colorado AUX station at 25.910MHz NBFM. Nothing heard on the 12M band and nothing heard on 15M, but coming on the WARCby ThaDood - Other logs
Well here's a link of someone trying the BST-1 (I've heard it referred to as the Beast One), in their minivan, The no SSB is the sore one for me.by ThaDood - The Workshop
This is the 1st I've heard of this, I've dealt with them since 1991, when I 1st got into amateur radio. I guess HRO is the next best bet. Certainly not that new DX Engineering. That place is nothing but sticker shock.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Although I'm pleased that AM Carrier-Current was covered, since it practically never is, yet still a valid way to broadcast licence-free, I would have to agree with KDX Radio's comments that the expanation of the very subject was very vague, to say the least. Very little tech info, and pretty much no talk of the main means of RF coupling today, which is via the the existing power lines, or that dby ThaDood - General radio discussion
Tell ya what, AM radio here in West Virginia has gotten a recent huge listening audience with the recent events of all the flooding down here. The local AM station in the Capital Region, 580 WCHS, has, and is still, doing constant flood coverage. They have a good 5KW signal and in a car stereo I can pick them up from just about anywhere in the state, if not further. You can also hear them streamby ThaDood - General radio discussion
Thank you Boomer for sharing this info on Radio Survivor's special on the history of AM Carrier-Current broadcasting, I plan to upload this to my Dropbox.com page if anyone wants an easier link to download it from my page at . Finally!!! This method of broadcasting gets a great mention. Eh... Who am I kiding? Here's the Dropbox.com link here,by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Looks like this is out, or just coming out, Glad to see that Andy is still at it.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
OK, here this is, Yeah, well, what I want to know is how do I get on a committee to study this, request a couple million $$$$ in funding, come back in two years with results inconclusive, and request a couple million more $$$$, then when the investigation comes around to checking us out put out the "No schytt Sherlock!" answer, then bail? That is how this works, isn't it?by ThaDood - General radio discussion
Bonjour Alantic 2000! I see that Sporadic E is hot in Europe. Anyway that you can get something going on the 25MHz 11M broadcast band? 10W can get you very well heard several hundred km's. Passing thoughts since 6070KHz is terrible for North America with Toronto's CFRX on 24/7 here. Not knocking them, since I do like tuning into them often, but a bad FREQ here where I am to hear anyby ThaDood - Broadcast announcements
I've never had one of these, but on 10M and 6M, whether FM, or USB, the DX-70TH sounds pretty good out there. Most of the contactees I've worked had these rigs in the mobile. I don't know what these sound like on AM, yet, but I had no problem copying either local, or DX stations, working from the road with these. That LDG AL-100 is a great complement to that rig. Where other tuners fail to tune uby ThaDood - The Swap Shop
I might have posted this before hand, but with Sporadic E propagation ramping up, from very weak openings to wholly schytt 222MHz is bouncing there, this article and 10M Beacon guide is a nice tool. Ahhhhhhhhh, but the site that I do like that spot lights world-wide, as it happens, propagation from DC to light is I use it most for 6M, but when 40M, 15M, and even UHF 432 and up propagby ThaDood - General radio discussion
The volunteer engineer from LPFM stations WTSQ-LP, and the now testing WWSA-LP, FWR this link to me. Some neat stories and techie reads here. I like the AM stuff posted in it.by ThaDood - General radio discussion
It's a long read, but things could get interesting, Now, how could this affect pirates and legit broadcasters alike? Hmmmmmmmmm????by ThaDood - General radio discussion
