The Free Radio Weekly (FRW) is an internet newsletter devoted to the hobby of listening to free radio "pirate" broadcasters in the shortwave radio bands. The FRW is produced by the free radio community and distributed to those who contribute.

The weekly deadline is Saturdays at 0000 UTC (Friday night in North America). Please send your logs to all the editors, as our editing schedule is subject to last minute changes. Thank you for your inputs!

On Barrington Hills IL sdr, fair S9+ signal with low noise, soft rock tune, various tunes with the word "cry" in them such as "big girls don't cry" and "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to" and "now it's Judy's turn to cry", nice selection of oldies, good fidelity, thanks for the program. SSTV/FAX at 0229utc followed by good bye announcement and interval signal played on piano then carrier off at 0232utc. (Hassig-IL)

9/25, 0108, 6960am. Ballsmacker Radio, 34343. Pop music (didn’t figure out a theme,) 0108 ID and signature bowling pin strike. Fair – good. (Taylor – WI)

9/26, 2253, 6952usb. Rock music, s7/s9, very good signal. Black Flag Radio (Zeeky) talking at 2255. (Will-MD)

9/25, 0005, 6935usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr, fair S9 signal, male shouting version of "sounds of silence", song "have you seen the rain" by CCR, later: punk rock tunes. (Hassig-IL)

9/25, 0029, 6935usb. Rock music, The Bouncing Souls, Gone; Green Day, American Idiot; 0035 Zeeky on with reports IDing the station as Cockroach Radio. s9/s15 peaks, superior signal. (Will-MD)

9/25, 0058-0105*, 6935usb. Zekey with a cow, a man singing, a more cow sounds. SS tune. Closes with "Goodnight all, take care." (35343, Hunsicker, PA)

9/25, 0031, 6925usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr, weak S5 to S7 signal, hear soft pop music under the low noise level. (Hassig-IL)

** Dr Detroit

9/25, 2234-2242+, 5185am. Very weak in central Kentucky. HFU says it was Dr. Detroit. (Gay-KY).

** Earth Station 1 W

9/24, 2339, 6920usb. Odd sounds, James Bond music with varying effects, bits of Humble Pie song, odd sounds, whistlyng weirdness, shepherd tones, CW, RTTY, James Bond music, odd tones; at 2352 "think of us when you see planet venus in the sky"; 2253, "earth station 1 W"; more odd sounds, CW, Carly Simon James Bond song. s9 steady. Very interesting broadcast! (Will-MD)

9/24, 2346, 6920usb. 1W. Very unusual program of shortwave digital signals (including “Whales”,) often over the chorus of “To sir with love,” or a flute section of a pop song, twice broadcast a series of 3 waterfall images (hard to describe right facing V with white dots behind giving the impression of movement or a beach with boats lights), few very fast CW ID’s, 0015 verbal ID. 9/25, 0050-0113, 6970am. Seemed to be a news feed. Talking about Joe Biden. (Faint, Hunsicker, PA)

** Goat Cheese Radio (Zeeky)

9/25, 0013, 6935usb. Zeeky with a program of hard rock, talking about the station and running out of power at one point. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

** Goat Herder Radio (Zeeky)

10/1, 0023, 6931usb. S9, live-sounding DJ about connexions, says there is another unknown just below him but not QRMing. ``--- Radio`` featuring oldies, gonna relax, have some sweet wine. 0024 song about angels, Teen Angel? 0030, `Wheels`, ``I love this song!``. 0034 ``Oldies Radio``. 9/25, 2301, 6929usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr, weak S5 to S7 signal with low noise, hear slow pop tune, KIND ID at 2304utc, at 2337 bluegrass music, at 0001 "sound of silence" by Simon and Garfunkle. (Hassig-IL)

9/26, 0000-0014*, 6929usb. Two versions of "Sounds of Silence." One with flute, the other by Simon & Garfunkel. Also played "The Boxer" at 0008 into a few comments then s/off. Fair-to-good signal although op's voice was a bit muffled. (Sedlacek-NE)

9/27, 0202, 5130.4am. Music, Classical Gas by Mason Williams. s7/s9, very good audio. Steppenwolf, then "microphonuim testing 1..2..3.." at 0206 and back into Magic Carpet Ride. 0210, Ripple by the Grateful Dead. 0214, Crawl Out Through the Fallout by Sheldon Allman. Off at 0216. Back on at 0224 with an s5 signal and deep fades. 0226, Mindless Drug Hoover, Reefer Song. 0228, signal improved to s7/s9, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company D. 0231, Billy Jones, Ain't We Got Fun. WBCQ robot ID at 0232 and off. (Will-MD)

** Outhouse Radio

9/25, 0034, 6925usb. Mellow rock music, SSTV (Outhouse Avatar with unintelligible line at top, “Sycko” in yellow about half way down and “Outhouse Radio” at the bottom. Outhouse continued with a program of rock music and a few more SSTV’s. Only checked in occasionally as I was doing other things. (Taylor – WI)

9/20, 0030, 6935am. Mellow instrumental 0039 ID into electronic music. Poor – fair. (Taylor – WI)

9/26, 0126, 6950am. Fading in and out for the whole evening. Playing rap, ballads (“Georgia on my mind,”) “Cabaret,” pop, etc. ID caught about 0145. Fair at peaks to inaudible at times. (Taylor – WI)

** Radio Irrational International

9/22, 0052, 6935usb. Instrumental with strong beat, 0054 ID, “One in a million,” faded out or something happened that the signal dropped, 0059 signal started fading back up, “It’s alright tonight,” ID, off 0103. Fair until signal dropped off. (Taylor – WI)

** Radio Nowhere

6974.9 PIRATE (No. Am.) UnIdentified (presumed Radio Nowhere by distinctive frequency), 0034, 9/20/21. Sparse experimental music, atmospheric electronic music. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

** Unid

9/25, 0113-0128, 6935usb. Sort of annoying BC that was mostly two phrases repeated separately many times. "xxxxxxxx control everything" and something about disconnecting our computers. Hard to understand computer-generated voice. Voice separated by 60-ish English (as in UK) rock. (35343 to 35332, Hunsicker, PA)

9/25, 2038-2106+, 6950usb. Probably Radio Genix but no ID heard. Fair-to-good in central Kentucky. Music by Combayah, James Brown, Thomas Dolby, Boy Meets Girl, Andy Tielman, Gary Numan, Beck, others. (Gay-KY)

9/25, 2124-2138, 6969usb. Armchair copy in central Kentucky. Music by Tobu, Taly & Smith, Viral Tracker, Franco Paulsen. Would occasionally send a message in CW "It is a fake Beerus and Skipmuck that you saw yesterday". More music heard on this frequency from 2207-2213 UTC. (Gay-KY).

9/25, 2151, 6924usb. Techno music, indistinct talk. 2 carriers started, then 1 stopped leaving the other on 6925. and the 6924 USB signal was buried. Poor. A station was reported on 6925 USB, however I has nothing here. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 2337, 6935usb. Silly sounding electronic music, “ahhhnnnn … (???) control of your soul” repeated 3 times, off. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 2220-2233+, 6924.9am. Seemed to be two AM stations on nearly the same frequency. No IDs heard. The weakest one was playing what sounded like rap. The stronger one seemed to be voice and perhaps trying to address the other station ("hey Zekey"). So the music may have been Zekey. (Gay-KY).

9/26, 2121-2141, 6925usb. Music seemed to be mostly female vocalists, but not strong enough to ID. Did hear one cover of "Paint It Black". Poor-to-fair in central Kentucky. Overlapped with Yeah Man Radio for awhile. The UNID was mostly heard by DXers in the Midwest, Yeah Man better on the east coast. (Gay-KY).

** WDOG

10/1, 0025, 6925usb. Another S9 pirate with raucous rock; 0027 gibberish with bleeps, YL ID sounds like ``WTIC`` which is a real station in Hartford. Must have been WDOG, per many logs here: [www.hfunderground.com] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** WFDR

9/26, 2030-2057, 6935usb. Usual fare. Off at 2057 with "WFDR, good night". Fair-to-good in central Kentucky (Gay-KY).

9/24, 2335, 6920usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr, fair S7 signal, strange sounds, at 2346 James Bond music, at 2348 song "to sir with love", James Bond theme again at 2350, this station is weird. (Hassig-IL)

** Yeah Man Radio

9/26, 2121-2125, 6925am. OM/EE proselytizing then the song "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. Not heard here, poor-to-fair on a New England Kiwi. Overlapped with an UNID USB station for awhile. Yeah Man was heard on the east coast, Midwesterners had the UNID USB music until Yeah Man signed off. (Gay-KY).

** YHWH

9/19, 1930, 11840am. In progress at tune-in with anti-Christian "Josiah Elias" with his station ID, monologues talking of how easy it is to trick the masses, and Jewish take on coming of the Messiah. ID again w/ improved signal level at 1957. "Cease operation" ann at 2008, foll by Days of Hard Life song. Post-closing ann by operator at 2013 & off -- Fair; Good on peaks. (Barton-AZ)

9/25, 1650-1735+. 11840am.Weak but stable signal which made copy difficult. Used SSB to help pick up Josiah through the noise. (Sedlacek-NE)

9/25, 2050, 11840am. In progress at tune-in. Monitored with Drake SW1 and longwire antenna. Not typical monologue. Still "Josiah Elias", but different topics, including some criticism of Israeli govt.. Recheck had bx still on at 2140, but suddenly cut out and gone -- Fair; deep fades (Barton-AZ)

9/27, 0300, 7475am. Not heard today during daylight hours on the usual 11840 (or anywhere else). In progress at tune-in with "notorius Jesus Christ"; anti-Christ, and burn your flag lectures. Dem daaaays of hard life at 0313. Closing ann & off at 0318. -- Fair to Good (Barton-AZ)

9/28, 0215, 7475am. Josiah mocking the "hybrid man-God", jackhammered by over-the-horizon radar bursts at 0225 and 0310. Cease operation ann at 0317 and Days of Hard Life, foll by second sign-off anns after a little extra lecturing & full off at 0321 -- Fair (Barton-AZ)
