The FREE RADIO WEEKLY (FRW) is an internet newsletter devoted to the hobby of listening to free radio, “pirate,” broadcasters in the shortwave radio bands. The FRW is produced by the free radio community and is distributed to those who contribute.

For AI Radio: music by Infected Mushroom with IDs and OM who was difficult to understand between songs. 0001 SSTV (Heinz 57 label with “Outhouse Radio 57 Varieties”) and into a program of hard rock music and talk by Outhouse. Artificial Intelligence Radio, 8 & 9 July 2023, 2349, 6930USB. Via Brookfield WI sdr with weak S5 to S7 signal, house music, male said "Artificial Intelligence Radio", at 0000 utc SSTV/FAX then heavy metal music at noise level, at 0014 SSTV/FAX. (Hassig-IL)


Ballsmacker Radio


Ballsmacker Radio, 8 July 2023, 0056-0249*, 6960AM. The regular, Friday night program. The carrier appeared at 0056, the them music started at 0058, and the program started at the hour. Music, music, music. 38 dB above the noise is good for a pirate. 8500 Hz. bandwidth. Effect of a noisy night can be seen in the SSTV ID. (55444, Hunsicker, PA)


Ballsmacker Radio, 8 July 2023, 0058, 6960AM. "Wildfire" IS, ID, “Good evening. You are listening to Ballsmacker Radio, broadcasting from somewhere in the Northeast." bowling ball strike sfx. I couldn’t figure out the theme unless it was bad love relationships. Music included: 'Everybody Hurts' - R.E.M., 'Love Hurts' - Nazareth, 'Haven't got time for the Pain' - Carly Simon, 'Burnin' for You' - Blue Oyster Cult, 'Hurt so Bad' - Linda Ronstadt, 'Back Stabbers' - The O'Jays. ID with bowling ball strike sfx. and periodic offer of e QSL about every 2nd song. 0245 ID & e QSL offer, SSTV (woman with red bowling ball and "Ballsmacker Radio"), YL w/ e QSL offer, "see you next time", 'Wildfire' IS, 0249 off, carrier drops 0252. Ballsmacker Radio, 8 July 2023, 0111, 6960AM. Via Brookfield WI sdr with noisy S9 signal, song "I haven't got time for the pain", at 0136 the theme song from "MASH", various songs having to do with pain and loss, By 0200 signal improved to as much as S9+20, thanks for the tunes. (Hassig-IL)

Captain Morgan Shortwave, 8 July 2023, 2235-2324*, 6924.75AM. The carrier and music started at 2235. The signal was very weak, and the broadcast was mostly unusable. (15341, Hunsicker, PA)


K200


K200 (rebroadcast) 8 July 2023, 2357, 6935USB. A man and woman initially, rude sounding man briefly as part of a radio play, signal came up at 0011 with an ID and mention of 1994 before fading back down into a man and woman talking with only vague reception. Signal was just above the static floor with short periods of fair audibility. (Taylor – WI)


Mix Radio International


Mix Radio International, 9 July 2023, 0003-0009*, 6965USB. Six minutes, that was it. Opened with an ID and played music and then was gone. 10,000 Hz bandwidth. Stout signal. (45554, Hunsicker, PA)

Outhouse Radio, 8 July 2023, 2330-0007, 6930USB. Program in progress with faint music. I don’t know if the program ended or just faded away. An SSTV ID in Scottie 2 was just readable (if one has seen it before). (Mostly unusable, Hunsicker, PA)

Radio Azteca, 9 July 2023, 0150-0329*, 6935AM. A rebroadcast of programs 22, 23, and 24, via the Radio Azteca Relay Service. A weak signal, a noisy evening, and distortion in the recording made listening difficult. Peskies joined the show on 6938 at around 0154. (Barely usable, Hunsicker, PA)

Unidentified, 10 July 2023, 0153-0228, 6950USB. Gravely voice with Hello, hello, hello. Tones rising in pitch. Frequent quiet periods. Believes that “This is pirate radio taking over.” Also, operator is not happy with Big Willy, suggesting he should do unpleasant things to himself and that he is a pedophile. Unidentified, 10 July 2023, 0223-0301*, 6899.6FM. Not on the grapevine, but I saw it on the waterfall and, because it was a recording, I was able to play with it. It was not just FM, but wideband FM at around 44,000 Hz. The FM never got running cleanly. It almost worked around 0258 with a strong and almost clear signal. Screen shot follows. (Hunsicker, PA)

Wasteland Radio


Wasteland Radio, 9 July 2023, 0251-0447*, 6950USB. Program in progress at 0251. Only 16 dB above the background, listening was difficult. Young Billy is told a story and then some simple guitar work accompanied by a drum. SSTV at 0319, 0328, 0348, 0434, and 0435 (an ID). Also, there were at least three waterfall images, one an ID for Wasteland and the other an ID for Outhouse Radio (57 Kinds). Noise and the weak signal affected both the SSTV images and the waterfall images. (25342, Hunsicker, PA)


WDOG


WDOG, 9 July 2023, 0155-0317*, 6955USB. Program and music began at 0155 with the WDOG theme music, some CW, barking dogs, and an ID. A mix of genres, it was pleasant to hear. Pretty stout signal. At the end there were two or three minutes of three persons telling someone to shut-up. (45554, Hunsicker, PA)


WDOG, 9 July 2023, 0236, 6950USB. ‘Another Girl Another Planet' - The Only Ones, ID and bit of chat, dog howl, 'Denis' - Blondie, ID and howl, Op calling dog, unid song, 'Another Girl Another Planet' again, jingle ID and into a program of rock music with many IDs and dog howls. Fair. (Taylor-WI)

WTF Radio Worldwide, 9 July 2023, 0045-0149*, 6950USB. In progress at 0045, with an ID at 0049. First song was “Suck My Joy.” Then a program of Beatles tunes performed by other artists; “tonight’s show is from an alternate universe where the Beatles are Black.” Wonderful interpretations of the Beatles song book. XFM


XFM, 10 July 2023, 0125-0300, 6865USB. A live program via Mix Radio International that was in progress when I tuned in. It was also being relayed by Two Dog and Radio Illuminati. Red Hat chats about his job, producing this program from work, being an engineer and other things. Meantime, he played MOR music and acknowledged HFU reports several times. 14,000 Hz bandwidth. Yeah Man Radio


Yeah Man Radio, 8 July 2023, 2323-0034*, 6950USB. Music started the program at 2323. Million Dollar Weekend jingle and funky music. Yeah Man chats and IDs. Noted that he had changed frequency to get out of the way of other broadcasters. Talks about John Scofield’s music. (35443, Hunsicker, PA)


Yeah Man Radio, 9 July 2023, 0009, 6950USB. Mostly just audible at the static floor, however came up at 0009 with Yeah Man talking, shout out to HFU and other talk, 'Hottentot' - John Scofield, 0015 recording start), then a fade down & 0019 out. Poor. (Taylor – WI)
