The Free Radio Weekly (FRW) is an internet newsletter devoted to the hobby of listening to free radio "pirate" broadcasters in the shortwave radio bands. The FRW is produced by the free radio community and distributed to those who contribute.

The weekly deadline is Saturdays at 0000 UTC (Friday night in North America). Please send your logs to all the editors, as our editing schedule is subject to last minute changes. Thank you for your inpoots!

2/4, 0201-0217*, 6950usb. The program and the music started at 0201. Rock music. “Meow” and “Woof-woof” heard. SSTV in SC2 60 at 0216 (25342, Hunsicker, PA)

** Bad Dog Radio

2/4, 0240, 0240-0310*, 6950usb. Program and music started at 0240. SSTV in SC2 60 at 0301, 0307, 0309, and others. Often unusable due to the noise. OM chatted about putting his thoughts in a balloon. 2800 Hz was a good fit. (25342, Hunsicker, PA)

2/4, 0244, 6950usb. "Air Balloon" - Lily Allen, OM w/ comedy routine about a balloon, "My Balloon" - nelward, "My Balloon" - Gabriel Garzon - Montano, "Where is my balloon" (not sure of artist), dialogue between man and "monkey" (child oriented) about finding the man’s red balloon, UnId song - perhaps child oriented - several brief drop outs during this song, "Hot air balloon" - Don Diablo & AR/CO - periodic buzzing during song which did not seem part of the music, UnId beat w/ various sfx, 2 SSTV (green figure on red background w/ "Bad Dog Radio"), 2nd SSTV didn't decode. Balloon topic was due to Chinese spy balloon which was floating over the U.S. Started fair and deteriorated to poor. (Taylor – WI)

** Ballsmacker Radio

2/4, 0159, 6960am. "Wildfire" IS, 0200 ID, “Here comes the rain again” - Eurythimics, "On the road again" - Willie Nelson, ID, "Thank you (Falettine be mice elf agin)" - Sly and the Family stone, into program of "again" themed songs. ... 0345 SSTV (poor decode here), ID and eQSL offer, "Wildfire” IS, off 0347. Fair. // 4030 AM at 0204 and various checks until sign off. 4030 was fair although nosier than 6960. (Taylor – WI)

2/4, 0205, 4030am. On Traverse City MI sdr with fair S9 to S9+20 signal, Willy Nelson "on the road again", Ball Smacker ID, Sly and family stone "thank you for letting me be myself again", Supremes "back in my arms again", Ball Smacker ID, song "won't get fooled again", song "let's twist again", signal up to good S9+30 at times, Ball Smacker ID at 0240utc, songs with the word "again" in them, BTW this 4030 is much better than parallel 6960, also tried tuning in locally with Kenwood R2000 and 7mhz backyard dipole and was S9+20 with S9+10 local Uverse hash, also parallel 6960 is lost cause under Uverse noise, at 0345 utc SSTV/FAX, at 0346 good bye announcement, piano IS, carrier off at 0348 utc. 2/8, 0005-0111*, 6980am. Carrier appeared at 0005 and music started at 0009. Nasty band of noise and dancing among LSB, USB, and AM. 3400 Hz was a good fit. ID at 0039. (25351, Hunsicker, PA)

1/31, 0100, 6935usb. Flute music with Balkan or Slavic flavor, ID, "Confirmation" - Jackie McLean, into program of jazz. Poor – fair. (Taylor – WI)

2/4, 0405, 6935usb. “Don't get too hip" - Hank Mobley, Op mentioning that was a request & ID into "Down my way" - Jelly Roll Morton, ID, "Curtain Call" - Hank Mobley. Poor – fair. (Taylor – WI)

** Captain Morgan Shortwave

1/30, 0226, 6931.31am. Program of blues music including BB King’s “You upset me baby” with IDs between songs. Fair – poor. (Taylor – WI)

2/3, 2201, 6935usb. Various children's novelty songs and ditties, 2207 clear ID by YL. Mostly barely audible. (Taylor – WI)

** Cool AM Radio

2/5, 0008-0205*, 6980am. The carrier appeared at 0008, faint music at 0038, and full volume at 0029. IDs at 0040, 0045, and 0048. Mostly Rock. (Just usable due to noise, Hunsicker, PA)

** KOLD

2/4, 0231, 6925usb. "I'm cold" - Guided by voices, OM; "You are listening to KOLD" - pause, Op “Are there any pirates out there?” … pause … 0316 "Summer" - Calvin Harris, Op offering to hand out gloves and IDing into "Ray of Light" by Madonna, "KOLD. 10:24 (PM), have a good night." 2/4, 0317-0319+, 6925usb. Pop tunes & voice ID. SINPO=35233- (Frodge-MI)

2/4, 0434, 4030usb. On Traverse City MI sdr with fair S9+10 signal, instrumental jazz-rock music, I'm using wide IQ setting, good fidelity, off at 0441 utc after saying "that's all folks". (Hassig-IL)

** Mix Radio International

2/5, 0403, 5050usb. Eastern European folk music (sounded Bulgarian), folk - rock in Slavic, YL (ID?), YL singer in Slavic language, "Welcome to the United States of America. This is Mix Radio International", into more Slavic music. Despite a good signal, music volume was poor, the last ID was very clear. (Taylor – WI)

** MX NO ID

2/6, 0113-0220, 6950usb. I pulled the plug at 0220. The program and music started at 0113. Only ID was SSTV in Scottie 2 at 0123. (25342, Hunsicker, PA)

** Outhouse Radio

2/5, 0040-0222, 6930usb. Seemed to open with an SSTV in Scottie 2. More SSTV at 0057 (and ID), 0131 (QSL), 0133 (QSL), 0219, 0221, and 0222 (This one in Robot 36). 2800 Hz sounded best. Old penalties for piracy listed. Closed with an image of an exploding outhouse. (25343, Hunsicker, PA)

Instrumental dance music, OM reading the suspension of the bill of rights and all pirates to be hung, "Hoist the Colours" - Hans Zimmer, pirate "arrrgh", SSTV (3 figures dancing around a fire with "Outhouse Radio"), "Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" - Hollywood Singers & Orchesra, "Rime of the ancient mariner" - Iron Maiden, ID, "Sweet leaf" - Black Sabbath. On Barrington Hills IL sdr with fair S7 signal, electronic music, SSTV/FAX at 0058, pirate song "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" then punk rock tune, at 0121 heavy metal tune "Iron man" from 1970 by Black Sabbath, at 0131 read names of HF underground posters including me, at 0132 SSTV/FAX, music, at 0139 SSTV/FAX, at 0213 good bye announcement then slow jazz-rock, at 0219 SSTV/FAX, at 0221 comment then 2 SSTV/FAX's, off at 0223. Native Am. style flute music w/ atmospheric background into other atmospheric music, 2127 "Sunday afternoon in the park" Van Halen, "Rhiannon" - Fleetwood Mac, "Knowing me, knowing you" - ABBA, "Don't stop" - Bachman Turner Overdrive, tuned away … 2154 SSTV (Cartoon ant with "Piss-ant Radio"), atmospheric guitar music, 2206 OM; "You are listening to" YL; "Piss-ant" OM; "Radio" (tip of hat to RFW ID), bit more music, "You are listening to Piss-ant Radio", more music, off 2309. 2/4, 2013-2030*, 6935usb. Program and music started at 2013. 2800 Hz was best. Take Five, Harper Valley PTA. Others. ID at 2025, with phonetic spelling of 1700. (35343, Hunsicker, PA)

2/4, 0041-0049, 6930usb. House of the Rising Sun OM talking at 0048 was unusable. (35252, noise; Hunsicker, PA)

2/4, 0049, 6930usb. Led Zepplin - House of the Rising Sun", man with "Woof Woof", off. Back at 0135 with one country rock song, off 0137. Both fair. (Taylor – WI)

2/4, 0211, 6950usb. Lively rock song, man with "woof, woof", "99 Red Balloons" - Goldfinger, SSTV (balloon with "Baofeng" – this image was put on the HFU chat earlier in response to the Chinese spy balloon over the U.S.), man with "Oink, oink", off. Fair. Might be related to 6930 USB earlier. (Taylor – WI)

2/4, 0338-0440*, 6925am. Carrier appeared at 0338. Jazz, mostly an organ and a sax. Mostly unusable. 6000 Hz was okay. (15341, Hunsicker, PA)

2/5, 0304, 6925usb. Guitar heavy rock, Op: "What did you think of that?", pause, distinctive vocal (familiar voice, however Shazam couldn’t ID it), few words, rock. Pulled the plug as the signal was poor. (Taylor – WI)

2/7, 2137-2228*, 6929.8am. Carrier appeared at 0137 and the music started at 0141. A band of noise was moving down frequency and greatly affected clarity. From AM, switched to LSB, then USB and back to AM at 2158. Seemed to be a concert recording. 6000 HZ in AM and 3000 HZ in sideband. (35332, Hunsicker, PA)

** Radio Free Whatever

1/29, 2056, 6955usb. Radio Free Whatever, 2056, 1.29.23. DJ Dickweed (DJDW) announcing next record, ID, "The Feelings of Letting Go" by Moxy the Band, prepared ID, "I'm feeling alive” (don’t know artist), "Crème Broulee!" by spill tab; ID, DJDW announced songs, hi to HFU and shout outs, ID, "Eddie my love" by Brigitte Calls me Baby, "T love" by Quarters of Change. Tuned away at this time and periodically checked in. Still going at 2300. Good. (Taylor – WI)

2/4, 2042-2101 and 2134-2341*. 6955usb. Indy rock is working for me! Program and music started at 2042. Recording ran out at 2101, but listened live from 2134. 4000 Hz was right. (35454, Hunsicker, PA)

2/6, 0038-0220, 6935usb. The program and music started at 0038. Blues, Blues, Blues. Delightful. ID at 0045, 0059, and other times. 2800 Hz fit well. (35343, Hunsicker, PA)

2/6, 0052, 6935usb. Program of good electric blues including "I'm done cryin'" - Robert Cray, "Your love is like Heroin" - Tinsley Ellis, "Hard times" - John Lee Hooker, with IDs. Other performers included Robin Trower, Clutch, Michael Mann, Stony Curtis Band, and Jp Blues. Good. (Taylor – WI)

** WAVE Radio

2/6, 0033-0100*, 6925usb. The program and music started at 0033 with a bit of music and then an ID with the phonetic spelling of WAVE. Occasional undercurrent of an YL reading, in something other than EE, numbers station numbers. Otherwise, music. “Yankee, something, Foxtrot” repeated many times at the end, then “Roger, Wilco. ‘something’ sounded like “pumpkin,” sort of. 4000 Hz was good. (35554, Hunsicker, PA)

2/4, 2342-0012*, 6930usb. Carrier and an ID at 2342. WEAK spelled phonetically. “Neptune Network Presents Cooking with Fried Foods” Parents of Girls Gone Wild. 3000 Hz. (25343, Hunsicker, PA)

2/5, 0002, 6930usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr with fair S9 to S9+10 signal, some kind of comedy song, at 0007 utc good clear WEAK ID, punk rock tunes. (Hassig-IL)

** WRKO Relay

2/4, 1441-1652*, 6975.5am. Carrier appeared at 1441, audio at 0143 with an advertisement. Regular promos for WRKO and J. J. Jeffrey. Pop/Rock music. 6000 Hz okay. (Mostly 25241, Hunsicker, PA)

** Zanahorias en Escebeche (“Pickled Carrots”)

2/5, 0235, 6960am. Originally mis identified as Radio Libre from talk during the show. YL & OM alt., pause, tone, Andean style vocal, YL few words, Mexican style band, YL few words, another Mexican, 0248 CW ("zanahorias enescabeche" repeated), OM & YL, Mexican music. Poor. ID from decoding CW from recording and confirmed by others on HF Underground. (Taylor – WI)

2/5, 0341, 6959.895am. Mexmx S7/S8 into Utah SDR; checked after many reports in the WOR iog. And ID at 0424 as ``ésta es la Zanahoria en Escabeche`` which means ``spicy pickled carrots`` as had been heard two+ years ago.
