The Free Radio Weekly (FRW) is an internet newsletter devoted to the hobby of listening to free radio "pirate" broadcasters in the shortwave radio bands. The FRW is produced by the free radio community and distributed to those who contribute.

The weekly deadline is Saturdays at 0000 UTC (Friday night in North America). Please send your logs to all the editors, as our editing schedule is subject to last minute changes. Thank you for your inpoots!

12/2, 0028-0102*, 6933usb. Techno pop. The signal appeared at 0028 with IDs at 0039 and 0057. 4000 Hz fit well. (45455, Hunsicker, PA)

12/6, 2334, 6930usb. Hard rock, "Black Swan Radio transmitting to West Africa" repeated 3x, "All friends and kingdom come" - Monster Magnet, Pause 2347 & moved to 6935 USB. "Mineless Ones '68" - Monster Magnet, "Extinct" - Moonspell, ID by YL synth voice, "Black Swan Radio International Radio” (Now commencing?) “Service to North America" repeated 4 times in 2 sets, pause, start of another song, pause, "Homage" - Causa Sul (part), fragments of songs. Had to go to dinner at this point. Fair on both frequencies. (Taylor – WI)

12/7, 0232, 6960usb. S6/S9 of dense music; 0238 ID as ``Black Clock? 12/7, 0031, 6935usb. "Naima" (Take 1) - John Coltraine Quartet, OM talk (in fade), program of jazz which slowly faded out. OM talk (indistinct at several points.) ID from HF Underground. Probably the first time I’ve heard John Coltraine – one of my favorite artists - on pirate radio. (Taylor – WI)

** "The goat man"

12/8, 2332, 6935usb. UnIdentified. 1 hour and 40 minutes of very unusual programming. Maniacal laughter, / loop w/ unintelligible phrase (perhaps ending "micro - testing") … 0025 back from dinner. Techno into another loop, techno (maybe a processed loop of goat bleats and words), 0029 looped words, more techno music, "Hahahahah … The goat man." looped numerous times, sped up and out, then slowed down, etc. other looped phrases mentioning Zekey ending "the goat man", techno music. ** Hello Radio

12/3, 0028, 4185am/usb. 0028 utc on Barrington Hills IL sdr with very weak noisy S4 signal, barely hear bits of audio at times, at 0033 switched to Traverse City sdr with fair S9 to S9+10 signal, heavy metal tune "I'd rather die than give you control". (Hassig-IL)

12/3, 1350-1401*, 6933usb. “Shakin’” and the “Another Thing Comin.’” A glitch in the transmission here and there. 3000 Hz sounded good. Closes at 1401. (35343, Hunsicker, PA)

** Infected Mushroom Head Radio

12/8, 0120, 6933usb. Infected Mushroom Head Radio with dance trance music. Zeeky on the mic, ranting and raging at some other pirate operator. Says he's been off the air for several months. Perhaps he's ranting about the shit head who's been identifying as Infected Mushroom Head Radio and playing death metal and interfering with others lately? s9. (Will-MD)

** Official SWL Channel relay

12/3, 2204-2337, 6925usb. Gilles Letourneau’s SWL Channel re-broadcast by Pirate Radio Relay Network. Seemed a real-time relay, with Gilles acknowledging the rebroadcast at 2231 and thanking the relay operator. Talk of radios, listening, technique, and stuff. PRRN’s announcer also explained what was being relayed. (35443, Hunsicker, PA)

12/3, 2246, 6925usb. elay of the OfficialSWLchannel Youtube stream mentioning ham radio topics, pirate activity (Radio Free Whatever), then into a variety of radio related topics, 2259 mentions OfficialSWLchannel on Youtube. // Youtube stream. Fair to good. (Taylor – WI)

** Outhouse Radio

12/3, 0024, 6932am/usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr with nearly non existent signal, barely detect carrier in CW mode, at 0037 switched to Traverse City MI sdr with poor S9 signal, barely hear audio with woman singing, suddenly off at 0041 during heavy metal tune, came back on at 0043 with distorted audio and varying carrier freq, at 0044 station switched to usb. (Hassig-IL)

12/3, 1047-1220, 6925usb. Started with piano music and then some elevator music. I heard the voice of the Outhouse Radio announcer at 1102 and then IDs at 1117, 1126, 1131, and 1220. SSTV in Scottie 1 at 1117 and 1145. Noise slowly increased and the signal strength decreased until it was unusable around 1220. 4000 Hz was a nice fit. (35453 at its best, Hunsicker, PA)

12/5, 0036, 6932usb. Initially a fair signal, however signal deteriorating since ~ 0100. Dense guitar heavy music, 3 poorly decoded SSTV sends. SSTV (unusable) and off ~ 0117. blw's SSTV decode on HF Underground had "Outhouse Radio" clear enough to ID. (Taylor – WI)

12/5, 0051, 6932usb. Non-vocal electronic music. 0117 SSTV, EOT. No ID heard, HFU reports Outhouse Radio. 333. (Amelar-MI)

** Radio Free Whatever

12/3, 2155, 6950/6935usb. Partial simulcast. 6950USB started at 2155, but by 2218 was almost unusable. Still going at 2250. 45454 to unusable. 6935 opened at 2209 with a much better signal and ran until at least 0037 on 4 December. Also 45454 but faded badly 0025. (Hunsicker, PA)

12/3, 2236, 6935usb. Tuned in to a produced ID, Indy rock, DJDW announcing songs and talk the band closing. But he is being relayed in 6935U (where I’m listening), promoting being on mixlr.com/radiofreewhatever, shout out to folks who logged him on HF Underground into YL singer, produced ID, then program of Indy music and talk which continued for much of the evening, even after he moved from 6950U to 4185U. 6935U was good throughout the evening. // 4185 after 2308 was fair – good. 12/3, 2241, 6935usb. DJ talking about Indonesia, relays, S7/S9, only occasional words readable; novelty songs; S7/S9 vs S8 HNL. 2248 mentions ``Whatever``, so probably R Free Whatever as in many reports here:

On Barrington Hills IL sdr with fair S5 to S7 signal, woman singing ballad along with heavy metal guitars, at 0021 RFW ID then comedy bit with bleeps to hide bad words, at 0023 took call from caller, at 0042 I called 302-689-6307 and he put me on the air and we talked about uverse static and my recent cataract operation on my left eye. ** Two Dog Radio

12/4, 0052, 6950usb. Listening to a barely audible signal since 0027. 0052 faded up with "Booly, Booly", "Little red riding hood", …0131 "Play that funky music white boy", "Run through the bayou", - fading in and out - long fades to JBA then back up to fair. Managed to catch an ID. (Taylor – WI)

12/9, 0058, 6925usb. Two Dog Radio (test broadcast). A few short rock songs, ID, off 0107. Short broadcast test in what Two Dog knew to be poor conditions. Poor reception in very noisy conditions. (Taylor – WI)

** Pee Wee

12/5, 0207, 6950usb. "Jesus is just alright with me", SSTV started - didn't decode and disappeared at 0212, slowly back up w/ other oldies, SSTV ("Pee Wee was here"), 0224 off. Inaudible to fair depending on fading. About 6 minutes after going off there was a fuzz guitar version of “Silent night” which would be Pee Wee’s style. (Taylor – WI)

** Thunder Chicken Radio

12/3, 1353-1420, 6960usb. Mostly 25332 and unusable. 2800 Hz was best. Several rock guitar renditions of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer were played. (Hunsicker, PA)

12/9, 2255, 6955usb. Music, live version of Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll by Blue Oyster Cult. Godzilla at 2302. Bad Little Doggie by Govt' Mule at 2312. Some diginoise at 2315, and back to live music, One of These Days by Pink Floyd. SSTV at 2320. Turbo Lover by Judas Priest at 2324. Shout out to Costa Rica, Lobo at 2328. ** Unid

12/2, 2103-2132, 6924.6am. More of a “watch” than a “listen.” Heard faint music at 2013, which continued, unusable. Toward 0032 there was a faint spike on the waterfall. (unusable, Hunsicker, PA)

12/2, 2212-2230, 6900usb. Single ring of a phone and then talking about a “crazy motherfucker.” Strange talk and goings on with no apparent them. A data stream began at 2230 and when it was over, at 2241, there was nothing there. (35352, Hunsicker, PA)

12/2, 2300-2303*, 6925usb. A novelty tune and a few calls of “Hello Radio” and it was gone. (23542, Hunsicker, PA)

12/3, 1245-1252*, 6933usb. Heavy metal male vocal and then “Bang Your Head!” (35454, Hunsicker, PA)

12/3, 1521-1531+, 6960usb. Rock Xmas ditties. No ID offered; yet another music & no ID pirate. SIO=3+43 w/ticking QRM (Frodge-MI)

12/3, 1911-1913:30*, 6925usb. Tuned in to ditty Turn Your Radio On & off w/o ID. SIO=353 (Frodge-MI)

12/4, 0025, 6925usb. Hard driving drumming / dance style music, "You are listening to (unclear) Radio" (unable to ID even listening to recording), music continuing, ID in background, "Hello, Hello, this is a radio check. Stick your finger in your (bleep). If you can hear me. Thank you" repeated several times, fast driving chaotic music, "This is a radio check …" as before looped over sfx, faded out or off. Poor. 12/4, 0054, 4190am. "Doomsday" - The Purple Sun. Pause & switch to AM … into a program of hard rock. Off 0110. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

12/4, 0100-0113, 6935usb. Two bits of music that were unusable. It was gone at 0113, but I’m not sure that it was over. (25342, Hunsicker, PA)

12/4, 0103, 6935usb. "Crusing Around" - Te Huhu, "Ladykillers" - Lush, ID?, "Stutter" Elastica. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

12/5, 2231-2242+, 6960usb. Mostly hard rock w/brief spooky music & talk, mentioned “freak show”, but no ID offered. S8-9 (Frodge-MI)

12/7, 0241, 6952.5am. Repetitive, almost digital sounding music. Off 0242 & back, 0251 with "Heart of gold" w/ something else under it, many digital bursts. Slowly faded in and out eventually didn’t come back. (Taylor – WI)

12/2, 2136-2159*, 6925usb. ID at 2136 and again at 2134. Long stream of IDs and the opening few (four) words of Poppa Oom Mow Mow ran from 2142 through 2159, when it was gone. (35354, Hunsicker, PA)

12/8, 2300, 6935usb. News reports about congress declairing war on Japan on 12/8/41. Start of well known announcement of declaration of war, off mid sentence, ID and off. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

** White Crow Radio

12/9, 2248, 6925usb. Loud music, techno beat, swishing, unintelligible. 2249, robot voice, "This is Andre your deejay." Snippets of SSTV, then full SSTV with music underneath at 2250. Another SSTV at 2253. Off at 2255. Solid s9, very good signal. (Will-MD)

** Wild 100

12/4, 0143, 3225usb. Long program of light rock including 0143 "Is blood" - Youth Sector, 0156 "Born Yesterday" - Gladie, ID, other light rock. Few IDs then IDed after every few songs. ID and off 0341. Poor – fair with fading. (Taylor – WI)
