The Free Radio Weekly (FRW) is an internet newsletter devoted to the hobby of listening to free radio "pirate" broadcasters in the shortwave radio bands. The FRW is produced by the free radio community and distributed to those who contribute.

The weekly deadline is Saturdays at 0000 UTC (Friday night in North America). Please send your logs to all the editors, as our editing schedule is subject to last minute changes. Thank you for your inpoots!

9/24, 0127, 6960am. Pirate music at S9+20; 0133 soft tunes, YL ID? 0137 ``Teenagers in Love``; 0139 ID, ``Ball Smacker Radio`` with tenpins SFX. This is her regular Friday-night frequency; 0143 ``Down in the Boondox``; ID again at 0145, ``Ball Smacker Radio, [tenpins], 6960 AM, somewhere in the Northeast``. 9/25, 0056, 6955usb. s/SSTV ID @0056: (The Kinks) "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", in and out of the mud. Also heard "Black Betty" (Ram Jam) and other even more obscure stuff, but mostly in the mud. If there were announcements I didn't hear them! Playing album rock including "Purple Haze" - Jimi Hendrix, "Green onions" - Booker T & the MG's, and "Black Betty" - Ram Jams, with several SSTV sends sprinkled through: Short haired YL up to her nose in ? frosting with sprinkles w/ "Damn Skippy"; B&W "Damn Skippy"; Skull and crossbones on a TV with "Damn Skippy". 0227 off. ** KXLS 95.7 relay

9/23, 2311, 27184.5am. Local Enid CB pirate still undermodulated, relaying and // music on 95.7 FM KXLS, S9 enough to block the channel. At end of AAAWWW on WBCQ before 0100 UT Sept 24, reading some items from FRW specially compiled by lw, since new issue of FRW edited by Dave is never done before Saturday morning; including ``Good Buddy Radio`` in OK on CB ch 19, 27185 --- I never heard it called that. Did some otherokie report it? AW never mentions who logged the items he refers to, all too briefly, an opportunity ``not to encourage`` piracy, instead buy legal time on WBCQ, the only licensed [ex]pirate (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** Outhouse Radio

9/24, 0111, 6925usb. Program of music by Justin Johnson including “Iron and arsenic”. Outhouse slowly spells out station name and gives IDs between songs. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

9/26, 0057, 6930usb. Outhouse playing blues including “Picasso Blue by Mo Rodgers. SSTVs including a pencil drawing of an outhouse with “Outhouse Productions”, and another outhouse with “Outhouse Radio”. Frequent IDs and talk between and sometimes over songs. 0136 turned the frequency over to 2 Dog Radio. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

9/23, 2346, 6960usb. On Barrington Hills IL sdr with fair S5 to S7 signal, electronic music with woman and man singing, at 2356 SSTV/FAX. (Hassig-IL)

** Radio Free Whatever

9/28, 2335, 6955usb. DJ Dickweed taking a chance with the ionosphere and getting reports … continuing his series of programs of “best of RFW” including “Letter Down” – Theo Verney. DJDW with chatter, shout outs to folks who logged him on HF Underground, and many IDs. 0158 DJDW saying goodbye, "enjoyed broadcasting to you", last song, off 0203. Good to Very Good. (Taylor – WI)

** Sycko Radio

9/23, 2308, 6280usb. On Brookfield WI sdr with fair S9 to S9+10 signal, heavy metal tune played in concert, concert announcer introducing Stevie Ray Vaughan who then plays blues tune on heavy metal guitar, at 2320utc woman singing the blues, at 2345 SSTV/FAX then more blues in concert. (Hassig-IL)

9/25, 0002, 6950am. On Brookfield WI sdr with fair S7 to S9+10 signal, electronic music with heavy bass, DJ said giving away gift card, distorted audio, various nice tunes, at 0113 DJ read HFU logs including mine. (Hassig-IL)

9/25, 0011, 6950am. Sycko Radio (ID at 0011) with chatter and music, such as at 0002 OM saying "15 watts of madness" and into (Zebra) "Who's Behind The Door", "Devil Does Drugs" (My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult) and other obscure stuff. Mentioned this was the transmitter used in the late 1990s early 2000s and mention of Sycko Radio again at :25 talking about a ‘giveaway' of $100 Amazon gift card with a series of broadcasts with little clues to put together. At :28 "Shut Me Up" (Mindless Self Indulgence) also "Inner Cell" (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard) and "Silent Hedges (Bauhaus) were played. OK at first, 3+5443+ got worse, and pretty much in the mud by 0057 0000-0100+ 25/Sep RSPdx +SDRuno +ANC-4 +randomwire, IQ recorded --Zichi MI

9/25, 0103, 6950usb. Just audible until 0134 when signal began to rise and fade in slow cycles. One peask at 0116 included 0134 "Boss" - The Rumblers, "Rockin' my life away" - The Kingbees, "Little Green Bag" - George Baker Selection. Later did get an ID. Poor to fair depending on fading. 9/24, 0148, 6920usb. "Let it ride" - Bachman Turner Overdrive, distorted ID w/ soundeffects, "Jane" - Starship, distorted ID, "Tom Sawyer" - Rush into program of era music with distorted IDs. Off after SSTV (didn't decode here). Good. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 2330, 6280usb. An evening of all Joe Bonmassa including “A new Day Yesterday”, “Cradle Rock” and many others. SSTV at 2348 of 1990 frame of an ad with a frightened looking hen, bad guys and “Not just any chicken … THUNDERCHICKEN.” 0014 SSTV of Thunder Chicken, another just before s/ off at 0022. 9/26, 0037, 6930usb. Continuing the blues theme of Outhouse Radio earlier with more blues and blues / rock with IDs and talk between tunes. Fair deteriorating to poor as the evening progressed. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 2305, 6935usb. Man with a looped phrase (unable to make it out) into a complete reading of the Biblical Book of Revelations interrupted at a few points, including for an SSTV of a man playing a shofar with “Heed the Call” which was repeated once. Good in noisy conditions. (Taylor – WI)

9/29, 0108, 6925usb. UnIdentified waterfall images. Perhaps 10 – 12 iterations of waterfall images of spider, crab, alternating with another unidentified (perhaps a scorpion) figure, 5 - 7 uncertain images repeated after. Then gone. Saw the images on the waterfall of the Elad FDM2 and didn't have Easypal running, so didn't get to record any of the images. Clear images. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 0019, 6960usb. WANK w/instrumental classical music. At 0019 into (Mr Trololo) "Trololo Song" (This must be a WANK favourite!) "You are listening to WANK" ID at 0022, and off. Best reception of the pirates tonight, 3+4+444 from tune in to s/off. 0000-0100+ 25/Sep RSPdx +SDRuno +ANC-4 +randomwire, IQ recorded --Zichi MI

** WDOG

9/24, 0124, 6950usb. Somewhat different format for WDOG – all songs were “Dream” themed including “Dreams Tonight” – Avvays, “Dream on” – Blondie. Announcements were by a synth woman’s voice. Mentioned being “just down from Ballsmacker”. Dog barks and ID’s periodically. Nice parody of Ballsmacker. 0220 ID and still going. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

9/24, 0126, 6950usb. S9 pirate music; 0129 YL refers to ballsmackerradio.org -- what? Goes nowhere. BSR is already on 6960 AM, q.v. 0147 something about ``gold-plated`` and website again. 0151 listeners static?, 0152 transmitter off and on a few times, barking sound. 0157 different ID by OM over music and surprise CW once, only copied last letter, D or G. These explain it was really WDOG doing parody of BSR, maybe Bone Snacker? No such website either. [www.hfunderground.com] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

9/24, 0046, 6920usb. “Light my fire” - Doors, repeat last section of song, DJ w/ ID and "going back in time, (someone came on 6691U, so I lowered bandwith) "Pride girl" - Van Morrison, bit of talk, mentioned jammer on 6921 & went off. Fair until jammed. Attempted again at 0056 after several “oh yea”s. Unfamiliar music, "Hello you out there in radio land", DJ wonders what he should do for program, "Karn evil 9: 1st Impressions" Emerson, Lake & Palmer, ID over music, into similar music. Abruptly off at 0106 when a piercing tone came on 6920.6 again jamming his signal. Again fair until tone. (Taylor – WI)

9/23, 2358, 6945am. On Barrington Hills IL sdr with poor S7 to S9 signal, old Kinks song "set me free little girl", song "I'm so tired of waiting for you". (Hassig-IL)

9/24, 0005, 6920usb. Samples of many 60’s top 40 hits into several songs by The Kinks including “All day and all of the night” and “Look for me” with comments and ID’s between songs. Continued with era songs. Fair. (Taylor – WI)

9/25, 0037, 6929am. "Dark side of the moon" - Pink Floyd, "Space Oddity", "Magic Man" - Heart, … 0116 DJ talk including "Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey" before going off. (Taylor – WI)

WWWW ID at 0116 lots of Rock tunes like (War) "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "London Calling" (The Clash), "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (The Beach Boys), "Magic Man" (Heart) and (Cyndi Lauper) "Girls Just Wannna have Fun". If there were announcements between songs, they were lost in the mud, could only JUST BARELY make out the ID before carrier off.
