You're very close on the active vs. inactive rock. Active rock is modern/newer hard rock, that always mixes in some old standards like Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, later-period Scorpions, etc. This is opposed to "classic rock" which is a somewhat broad way of saying any rock music at least 15 years old. iHeart interprets "classic rock" as "let's play 350 of the biggest rock songs in a random rotation forever." Some "classic rock" stations play old stupid, whiny Guns and Roses songs continuously, which I consider neither rock nor classic.
