The change-over is scheduled for 2017, so they have a while to enjoy analog FM. It also affects *only* the national networks, so the private stations may remain analog for quite a while. Could be a tempest in a teapot. However, we face the same thing in the States with IBOC and if iBiquity wins, we all lose.by jtart - General radio discussion
Noticed WWV pretty weak (they were quite strong on 20.0 and non-existent on 25.0) and noted something behind them even weaker. No trace of WWVH or BPM. As WWV begins their time announcement there is a brief digital xmsn, then 5 pips, a pause, and one more pip matching WWV's minute pip. Also detected CW at 1945 and 2000, but couldn't make it out; probably an ID. Is ItalCable back on 15 MHby jtart - Other logs
No surprise; they were on 1800 to 1900Z. I've emailed Dick Spacewalker to suggest that he try an hour or even two hours later. As summer approaches the peak time is going to get later and later, so 1800 is simply too early. Unless he's aiming for Eastern Europe and Russia, of course..!by jtart - Free Radio Logs
The signal never really faded up. There was one little burst of music at 1837Z - and that wuz it! Couldn't ID anything, unlike two weeks ago...by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Carrier detected (by using USB) at 1801 and bits o' music surfaced by 1804 UTC. Once again Dick's on about an hour too early for good reception in the USA. Signal *very* weak and only audible using preamp 2 on the 756Pro. Should improve by the end of the hour...by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Back during the WQEW to WFME (1560 kHz) transition (while the station was off the air) I questioned Bram's reception of KGOW from Bellaire, TX, saying that they were directional WSW. Wuz I ever wrong! I had looked in my NRC Antenna Pattern Book and seen the wrong station: KTXZ, which *is* directional WSW fulltime. The log I have (2006 edition) actually shows KGOW as a non-directional daytime oby jtart - Medium Wave Logs
Just put freshly recharged NiMH batteries in the DX398 and walked around the yard. There's nothing eminating from the electric meter panel. Nothing at the pole in the yard. And nothing detected at the remote-reading water meter. I'm stumped! And getting desperate... Boomer suggested BPL, but to the best of my knowledge, there isn't any in the area. If there was, I might be using it! Cablby jtart - The Workshop
Well crap. One of America's most famous comics has died. Stanley Victor Freberg passed away at age 88. If you haven't heard of him you've been living under a rock somewhere, and shame on you. He has been one of our funniest (and cleanest) comics for more than 50 years. He pioneered the funny commercial, and took plenty of pot-shots at American history. He will be sorely missed!by jtart - General radio discussion
My thanks to Boomer who has offered to post the mp3 file on his website. Please take a listen and if you think you know what it might be, shoot me an email. http://boomerthedog.com/Strange_Noise.mp3by jtart - The Workshop
No. I'm hoping he'll mention that on his eQSL.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
I'm still puzzled by a wierd warbling noise that drifts around. It is especially noticeable in the 43m area but I've heard it behind weak stations as high as 19 meters and even in the MW band! I suspect it's fairly local to me. I first posted this thread in The Grapevine and had some good suggestions, but nothing panned out. It seems more appropriate in The Workshop, so I'll start a new threadby jtart - The Workshop
I am going to post the audio clip in the Workshop forum, where this thread should have been in the first place. So, you can mosey down there if you want to hear it... ;)by jtart - General radio discussion
Definitely German, and *not* religious, so most likely Radio Marabu.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Weak signal with Germanic "uhm-pah" sounding music (maybe religious?). I read elsewhere that Radio Marabu was around here Saturday night, but..? No ID heard as of yet.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Hope you kept listening; the signal improved quite a bit as the hour progressed! Maybe he should change to 1900-2000 for next week...by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Email reply from Dick Spacewalker in less than ten minutes promising a QSL shortly! Guess the yahoo addy does work.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Detected carrier at 1801 and had bits o' music by 1802. Mancr at 1803 but couldn't make anything out. Punk vocal 1804 with a brief peak to 20 db. Several unclear IDs at 1807, including pre-recorded ones, then more music. 1815 got an ID and a Netherlands addy for written reports, then song "It's So Easy To Fall In Love". Quite a bit of talking after 1820 which continued until 1829. 1837by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Mostly getting background hiss, but some music surfaced a moment ago so someone's there. Most likely from Europe.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
He was also booming into WNY last evening with an enjoyable show. S9 (sometimes over) in USB. Way better than the old AM xmtr, signal-wise.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Must be good prop to Europe tonight! Something on 6255AM with music peaking above the noise. M ancr, but too weak to pull anything out. Possibly Radio Marabu per another board. There's also something on 6285 kHz. Way weaker than the others.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Sounded like cut by Elvis Presley at first, then country at 0006Z. Music in English, anmts in something else. 0011 M ancr sez "This is Abu Dhabi Radio", then more country music (they seem to love it in the Netherlands!). Mostly weak and fadey signal, but peaked for ID at S7. Another ID at 0013.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
XEROX "Radio Duplicado" with good signal but downward drift and serious pestadore QRM. Reggae music and frequent IDs. Gave email and Box 1 for reports. Off abt 0040 UTC. Haven't heard them in years.by jtart - Free Radio Logs
Try this one: <www.topazdesigns.com/ambc> It's updated pretty regularly and run by a guy who writes for IRCA.by jtart - Medium Wave Logs
The latest info I have is that WKIK (like WKDO) is daytime only. There is no way they should have been on at 9:30 p.m. Maybe there's no human interface at the station on Sunday to turn it off? Or have they acquired nighttime power that I don't know about?by jtart - Medium Wave Logs
Got home from the market about 1140 ET and found WFME back on with the same droning man talking about bible passages. I can't understand how they get anyone to donate to the "ministry"!! However, that ends the DX alert. For now...by jtart - Medium Wave Logs
WFME apparently still off air. Tuned in at 0840 to hear country music with religious overtones. 0843 ID as WCNW (Fairfield, OH), then more rel c&w. 0850 WWYC (Toledo) in clearly with CSN promotions. Thought I heard a few words of French mixed in there but there's nothing listed in French or in Canada... When WFME is on, they're about the only thing I can hear; I'm within their primary contby jtart - Medium Wave Logs
Gee, maybe their down-payment check to Disney bounced..? ;) They're still off at 9:30 ET and some country music is coming in, but no ID so far. Update at 9:32 just heard a singing ID as WKIK. Odd, WKDO is usually dominant here... Thanks for the heads-up!by jtart - Medium Wave Logs
HUGE signal into WNY with music about the devil Stomes "Sympathy for the Devil" etc. Peaking around S9 and hardly any fades. Good to hear 'em again. I like the themes he presents...by jtart - Free Radio Logs
I see you've been doing a lot of thinking about the problem! So perhaps a breakfast nook would be in order? At least you wouldn't have to leave space for meals on the radio table. And that would solve the problem of getting crumbs in the radio gear... BTW, your formulae are accurate. I never have quite enough space for all my stuff, either!by jtart - The Workshop
Let's see... Loop. A couple radios. Notepad. Room for meals. You might wanna start with a larger table! ;) Or you could try hanging the loop from a planthook in the ceiling to reclaim some table space. Then you'd only have to worry about whacking your head on the loop. Could make you loopy... :( If you're going to build one, there are two basic types: Box and spiral. The spiral loop peaksby jtart - The Workshop
