Do I dare ring in on this? Whelp, here goes... This reminds me of the early 1980's, when VCR's were coming around to where folks could somewhat afford them. There would be a special TV show, game, televised play, see whom John Hohmes was bangin', etc, but ya had the chance of either watching it LIVE and recording it, or douchebags like me would have to work every F'n night, so you'd set it up and hope that it recroded while you were away. Right now, I don't have an SDR, (Well, at least not set up for that function, yet.), that can record a certain spectrum when I can't be by a rig, but I could certainly see that advantages of having that. You could still get vital info to send to the station captured like a full SINPO and start / stop times. Not to mention that you would now have a momentum of the station, convert audio to MP3, and can upload it to something like The Piratesweek. So, I see some big plusses there. I do agree that in a reception report it should be stated that you did it with an SDR in auto, but look at all the info that you can still relay back to ops of your reception. I believe it to be a great asset, but that's my $0.02 worth.
