I recently got the Meduci AM stereo detector card, haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to make some kind of super duper AM tuner with it. Even without stereo, I want to hear the low distortion of the sync detector on that card. I wanted it to replace the stereo AM detector in an MCS tuner I have, but I don't like the bandwidth in that tuner very much.
I'd have to get some wide ceramic filters, or try some ideas I've been thinking of, like a bandpass style IF strip rather than peak tuned, and bandwidth depending on signal strength, strong = wide.
That could be done by adding positive feedback to the IF strip, so when the AVC brings up the gain on small signals, the increased feedback increases the Q-factor of the IF, narrowing the bandwidth, plus increasing gain some too. I thought of that when reading about the Q multipliers that SWLs and hams used in the 1950s to narrow reception and improve signals.
Boast to the head!
