Wow....all great responses. One thing the FCC needs to abolish are the Daytme-only AM stations. If you can't offer a 24-hour signal to your community you don't have a chance.
But the bulk of the burden (and blame) belongs at the feet of broadcasters. The bean-counter-do-it-on-the-cheap-mentality has come home to roost. AM broadcaster's have done this to themselves. I can remember doing an A/B comparison between an AM-stereo and FM in the late 80's and the AM stereo won! Broadcasters let that opportunity slip away. AM can still work but owners have to turn off the satellite feeds and automations and start talking to, rather than at listeners.
The FCC can't fix stupid.
Anyone waiting for a magical solution from the FCC are in for a long wait. Thanks for all the excellent input on this topic. AM broadcasters would be smart to listen to listeners more than they listen to Consultants and Accountants.
