Well, I guess that CME hadn't hit here, yet, since around 9:15PM last night. What came blasting in on a Chevy Cruz stereo was this 1580kHz classic rock station playing that artist that sings, "Not A Fool To Do your Dirty Work!", followed by the long-ass Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What you Want, then AC/DC - Back In Black. When did it fade? Around 9:30PM, when the station logo came on, but did here the 92.7FM translator FREQ mentioned. Before I got home, another 1580AM came in there playing No Doubt. One thing about Gwen Steffani, you can't mistake her voice. So, this was all around twilight here last night, but I couldn't believe how well that 1580AM came-in.

I don't know, for some reason I feel better when I listen to WDOG, they speak to me. I knew or have heard almost every song played tonight, or knew who the artist was. Great stuff from the 'Dancehall days'

Good signal all along, nice bass on a sideband signal that was locked on frequency for easy tuning, and clean audio, though phasing in the signal later on. I don't mind it, listening to distant AM stations, it doesn't bother me.

Recording and listening, mostly not logging the times, listen to the audio.

Curious mix of punk and underground rock, soul with what sounded like Miles Davis, mixed with Daddy Rich from the Car Wash movie, black poetry and spoken word, sounded like a college station late at night. Certainly different that what you usually hear on the shortwave airwave.

10 khz wide audio, real clear, no ultra compression as some of the sidebanders use, easy listening, with nice dynamics. Trying with the AGC off during the AC-DC, there was serious dynamic range, punch, great job, different!

Deep bass. Frequency sounded off at times, but could have been the SDR correcting? Going +10 to +25 hz seemed to fix it, at least it was a try, I couldn't get it to sound coherent.

03:51 bird images in the upper sideband, "The bird is the word, everybody's heard' samples. This is done like Yaz's I Before E Except After C

03:55 Standard bird clip art image in waterfall, I think it's another station doing it though, as the bird sometimes was faded out while WBRD's signal stayed strong.

Well this station did catch me, thrilling broadcast from a station I never heard before! I was glued to the radio, WEB-888 SDR.
Have to say it's a good signal tonight. It hit some selective fading for a while, but SAM mode helped on that, then the signal stabilized later. Morse code interference at times. Always enjoy the nice AM these guys put out.

Got a bunch of those Bubble-Packed GMRS / FRS HT's around? Convert them to scanners! (no replies)

Back to FRS / GMRS??? So, you have some of those bubble-packed GMRS / FRS HT's sitting around, with wasted battery packs, so the charger is about useless. What do ya do with them? Convert them to GMRS / FRS scanners and listen to your neighborhood, travelers, and even local GMRS repeaters. Most of these 'lil HT's run on either 4.5VDC, or 6VDC. Just take out the battery packs, toss them, and replace them with a LM7805 in TO-220 package, with 12VDC lead-ins from either a power supply, or car's cig plug. Almost all of these HT's have a scan mode, so just put that on, and let it rock. Coming to a work zone? Most likely, the traffic directors are using those bubble-pack HT's, so it's kindda' neat to get the heads-up about this, even before ya get there. Not new, since we did this with CB's 40 years ago, when CB portables were used for that, and you could talk to the folks directing traffic. Now, you could take-off those 3" helical UHF antennas and solder in BNC connectors for an EXT UHF MAG mount, or just leave the built-in 3" antenna on, since UHF penetrates in / out of vehicles pretty good. Oh yeah... Some of the newer ones also have NOAA Weather Radio built-in as well. That seems to work mediocre, since you have to have a strong 162MHz signal to overcome an HT meant, & built, more for 462 / 467MHz. Still, can be a nice feature to have. I plan to put another one in my sister's car and have that scanning. BTW, with such a low current drain in RX mode, it's not like they'll drain the car battery anytime too soon. So, got these HT's laying around in the dust? Might as well use them. Ya just never know what ya might hear out there.

Wow... For decades, ops in the North East, that didn't have General Coverage Receive in their HF rigs, were able to still tune to the CHU FREQ's, when WWV was not as obtainable. Still, when propagation sucks for WWV / WWVH, CHU still can get through on their three FREQ's. So, this will be missed. BTW, I'd gotten word from an HFU post on this, just FYI.

Six stations on and one time under great band conditions!

Finally a station without the crunched audio like other SSB stations lately, and a more balanced, flat frequency response where you can hear the bass. It sounds like good AM.

It helped that his signal was stable, few propagation issues messing with the phase. I didn't see a vestigial sideband below the frequency either, on the waterfall, as some of the other SSBers have.

[www.radioworld.com] Huh... On FREQ, AM Radio boosters are nothing new, since I've read about Part #15 stations actually doing this permissibly for years by some ops. Ernest Wilson, of Panaxis Productions, gave examples upon how that can be done. However, that FREQ better be tight, since just as much as a 1/2Hz off could actually cancel a signal instead. I've done that test myself, tuning up a signal generator on a test bench, and watching my own AM1620 HET with it IN and OUT.

And, as long as we're doing a Radio World kick, Boomer FWR these:

01:40 Moonshadow by Cat Stevens, I used to not like the theme of this song, but I like it better now.
Good sounding AM this week, and strengthy signal too, went from dips of S5 to to peaks near +10, not bad for the amount of attenuation in the antenna on the SDR, WEB-888.

Good band conditions too, not the lightning crackle of last night, though I can hear individual bolts at times, but otherwise pretty clean. Had a carrier and 'modem' sound blast in there a few times.

Yep... The weekend of Saturday, April 18th, 2026, is not only Record Store Day, but a time where many stations do the event called Vinylthon, [www.vinylthon.com] Most of these stations are LPFM'er, college stations, and other public radio stations. So, are there any Part 15 stations doing this, or even linking-in to a station doing this event? Where I am, I'll plan to link to LPFM'er, WTSQ-LP 88.1FM, and be an ass-backwards translator for them. Give them AM coverage where their FM signal does not reach here, and they dig that, and totally permissible. [wtsq.org] and [radio-locator.com] So, if you have some nice sounding audio on your Part 15 stations, flaunt it with the Vinylthon Weekend. If anything, you'll sound very nostalgic. Oh... And something rare today, about the only time that you will hear live DJ's sinning-it overnight.

Good 80s mix, with lesser known tunes! Carrier within a few hertz of 6935, and stable.
